Mi'gwidelmag Gnitjgamitj is a short essay film that captures the beautiful landscapes of Listuguj Nation in the Gaspé Peninsula. Salmon is an important part of the diet, and tradition of the Mi’kmaq people. In 1981 the chief was ordered to remove all nets from the Listuguj River; the QPP subsequently raided, destroying their nets, and arrested some of the men. Because they fought for their rights in court, they are still able to fish today. Narrator Nation Isaac describes her relationship to her grandpa and his legacy in Listiguj.

Biography:

Nation Isaac comes from the Mi’gmaq Nation and was born May 24th, 1997, in Campbellton, New Brunswick, next door to the Reservation Listuguj, where she grew up and is now raising her daughter and brother. Nation has previously appeared in Wapikoni projects, and found inspiration to direct her own film. She sees this film as the first step in a life-long process of learning and sharing her community’s history and traditions. Nation is currently studying Horticulture at the Listuguj Mi’gmaq Development Center. She enjoys following the powwow trail, beadwork, traditional practices, and learning about First Nations issues.

English narration / English subtitles.
