Naomi Condo's journey of identity takes her through struggles against the stereotypes imposed on Aboriginal women. With an Irish mother and an L’nu (Mi’kmaw) mother, she is on the paler side of the skin spectrum, but she identifies as Mi’kmaw, participates in ceremonies, collects medicines, is learning the language and is raising her children on a reserve to embrace the culture. Stereotypes placed on indigenous women range from the negative (drunk, uneducated squaw) to the extreme, idealized ‘Indian princess’ image (Pocahantas). She identifies as strong, educated, vocal, athletic, love, a warrior – walking in the middle of the street, not looking like one group and not thinking like the other.
