In the time before people, Wesakechak was big brother to the birds and animals. He was their teacher but was also a trickster. He convinces the chickadees to share their medicine berries, and the cranes to share their eye medicine, but has disastrous results when he does not follow their instructions for use. Having learned his lesson, he teaches his little brothers about the importance of being careful with powerful medicine, never taking medicine intended for someone else, and following the instructions carefully.
Introduced by the Seventh Fire Prophecy told by Wawahtehsey from The Chippewas of Georgina Island, ‘Stories from the Seventh Fire’, retells traditional Cree stories. In ‘Tales of Wesakechak’, storyteller Gordon Tootoosis and animation based on artwork by Norval Morrisseau brings them to life. These videos celebrate the beauty, bounty, and vulnerability of Mother Earth, and inspire viewers to live in harmony with Mother Earth.
