Famous Italian artist Caravaggio's studio is full of chiaroscuro (light and shadows)! He shows Mati and Dada how he used chiaroscuro to make very dramatic paintings. His ‘Basket of Fruit’ is very realistic and includes some rotting fruit and dying leaves as well as perfect fruit. In his painting ‘Narcissus’, the figure from ancient Greek myth staring at his reflection seems to arise out of darkness. Caravaggio’s technique is to start by painting the canvas with a dark colour, then adding the lighter colours.
