They fled the war and yet still could not escape it. Up to 60 million people were forced from their homes under the Nazi reign of terror or as a result of the war. Survivors of the Nazi death camps, deportees and liberated forced labourers – all looking for a future and a new home. Children displaced by the Nazis were left searching for their biological parents. And many Germans fleeing the Soviet army were driven from their homes and forced to resettle. They all were left to wander the ruined landscape looking for food and somewhere to sleep – if only for a single night.
Those who suffer most were the weakest of all: the children.
