On April 7, 1868, D'Arcy McGee was murdered on his way home from Parliament. He was one of the Fathers of Confederation and Prime Minister McDonald's right hand man. It was Canada's first ever political assassination. The Fenians considered McGee a traitor to his homeland, Ireland, so many Irish Catholics were immediately suspects. John Whelan was quickly charged and convicted of the crime and was one of the last people ever to be given the death penalty in Canada. But was he the man who shot D'Arcy McGee? There are many questions about whether justice was carried out or if an innocent man was hung. Canada's most notorious cold-case is investigated as we revisit a time of nationalism, terrorism, and intrigue on the streets of Ottawa.
