‘A Tale of Two Qallunaat’ (people who are not Inuit) is a documentary about the legacy of two women artists who travelled to the Arctic in the early 1970s and what happens when elders and youth in today’s Pond Inlet and Iqaluit encounter that unique record of the past.

The film explores the enduring legacy of author Sheila Burnford’s ‘One Woman’s Arctic’ and the artwork of Susan Ross through intimate connections with elders and youth in Pond Inlet and Iqaluit. By sharing stories, sketches, photographs, and 16mm film footage, the film delves into the relationship between these two remarkable women, their experiences in the Arctic, and their connection to the Inuit community. Sheila’s daughter, Jonquil Covello, and Susan’s son, Tom Ross, honour their mothers' legacy with the donation of their art to the Thunder Bay Museum, fostering reconciliation and understanding. The documentary also highlights the influence of Robert Flaherty’s 1922 silent film ‘Nanook of the North’, exploring its lasting impact on the women and the Inuit community they came to know and love.
