Teenagers resent being told what they ought to do, but have they the resources for making their own decisions? This question is succintly illustrated in the quandary of a high-school girl who is determined to go to a gathering of her own friends rather than to a family gathering. When parental objections are removed and the choice is left entirely up to her, she becomes uncertain.
