Canada is the second-biggest country on earth, yet over 80 per cent of the country’s land is uninhabited, and most of us live clustered in a handful of large cities close to the Canada-U.S. border. This reality stems from Canada’s unique geography.
In “Our Canada: Its Geographic Regions,” students have a wonderful opportunity to explore Canada’s geographic regions. Divided into seven programs, this series is a visual journey across the country. Viewers are introduced to each region, its landscape, climate, settlement patterns, industry, vegetation and wildlife. Included in each is an overview of original settlement by First Nations.
Colourful animated maps, beautiful aerial and ground footage, and rich information help unfold Canada’s geography from east to west and north to south.
Produced in consultation with Anne Smith Mansfield (Queen’s University Geography curriculum instructor and winner of the Royal Canadian Geographic Literacy Award.)
Includes 7 programs, 15 - 18 minutes each with extensive resource guides for each region.
- Our Canada: An Introduction Resource Guide
- Our Canada: The Arctic Resource Guide
- Our Canada: The Cordillera Resource Guide
- Our Canada: The Interior Plains Resource Guide
- Our Canada: The Great Lakes - St. Lawrence Lowlands Resource Guide
- Our Canada: The Canadian Shield Resource Guide
- Our Canada: The Appalachian Resource Guide
The themes of sustainability and First Nations history that run throughout the series keep the series from being just another blandeducational tool. As well, the educational content is enhanced by well-produced graphics, animated maps, and definitions. The standout features of the videos are the beautiful, sweeping shots of landscapes from across the country. These informational and visual elements, along with the very enthusiastic narrator, make for a high-quality educational series that will be of great use in any upper elementary school social studies classroom. - Resource Links
