W5 goes undercover in an Ontario hospital to investigate the utilization of physical restraints such as chest vests and leather limb buckles on the elderly. They found that, due to lack of staff, restraints are used in Canadian hospitals every day, rather than as a last resort. And, once the restraints are on, they are likely to stay on. These devices can do more harm than good, causing physical and psychological damage, an increase in falls and in some cases can cause death. Burnaby General Hospital believes physical restraints, such as chest vests, are as dangerous as they are demeaning. It hired a clinical nurse specialist, Marsha Carr, five years ago to reduce the use of restraints and chest vests were her top priority.
