A series of 13, 1 minute segments celebrating milestone anniversaries of significance in Canadian history.

Includes:

  • Canada's First (controversial) Hockey Gold: During the 1920 Summer Olympics, Canada’s Winnipeg Falcons won the first ever hockey gold medal, which is disputed 82 years later.
  • Hudson's Bay Company and the Romance of the Far Fur Country: During their 250th anniversary in 1920, the Hudson’s Bay Company produced Canada’s first feature-length documentary.
  • Celebrating 50 years of the Arctic Winter Games: The 50th anniversary of the immensely popular Arctic Winter Games was unfortunately cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • The Battle of the Atlantic: For six years Canada courageously kept the vital supply lines open to Britain during the Battle of the Atlantic — ending in 1945 with the Allies’ victory.
  • Canada’s fifth province - Manitoba: In 1870, Manitoba became Canada’s fifth province, and the only one to join Confederation under Indigenous leadership.
  • The Birth of the United Nations - The United Nations, created in 1945 with 50 nations signing on, has since grown to 193 nations who collectively support the organization’s humanitarian ideals.
  • Banting and Best and the Coin Flip that Decided History - In May of 1921, Frederick Banting approaches renowned physiologist John McLeod of the University of Toronto with a theory on how to treat diabetes.
  • British Columbia Joins Confederation: Isolated from the newly minted Dominion of Canada and hemmed in by the U.S., British Columbia's fate is up in the air.
  • The Negotiating of Treaties 1 through 11: After Confederation in 1867, treaties numbered one through 11 are negotiated between the Crown and First Nations.
  • 50 years of Canadian Multiculturalism: On October 8, 1971, Canada became the first country in the world to adopt multiculturalism as an official policy. In the 50 years since, the idea of Canadian multiculturalism has been reinterpreted, expanded — and challenged.
  • The BluenoseThe racing schooner Bluenose brought fame to Nova Scotia and her captain throughout the 1920s. 100 years later, Bluenose II is a romantic reminder of fishing’s golden age of sail.
  • Viola Desmond’s Courageous Stand Against Racial Segregation: On November 8, 1946, Black Halifax business owner Viola Desmond made a stand against racial segregation in Canada by refusing to leave the whites-only section of a New Glasgow, N.S. movie theatre. Seventy-five years later, Desmond’s courage continues to be honoured and remembered by her appearance on Canada’s $10 bank note.
  • Agnes Macphail - A Political Trailblazer: On December 6, 1921, Agnes Macphail became the first woman elected to the House of Commons. Throughout her long political career, Macphail championed the rights of women, immigrants, prisoners and other marginalized groups despite critics who accused her of communism and attributed her views to her “womanly sympathy.”
