Meet the rare Spirit Bear and the Gitga’at First Nations who teach others about its beauty and importance.

The Great Bear Rainforest is one of the few places where the rare Spirit Bear can be seen. Several communities in the Hartley Bay area have invested in ecotourism, bringing significant revenue and economic prosperity to the Gitga'at First Nations while sharing their values with tourists. This white bear is the result of a recessive gene in the local black bear population, producing about one in ten bears with white fur and black rimmed eyes. The "moksgm'ol" has spiritual significance to the Gitga'at, who are dedicated to keeping the area safe for these bears and other wildlife.
