Every day Durham prison staff must deal with assaults on fellow prisoners and on staff members. The atmosphere is volatile because as a reception prison Durham receives many new prisoners every day. On admission often little is known about the prisoners’ background, they can arrive emotionally unstable from the courts – often with private scores to settle. Yet within this turbulent atmosphere the staff battle not just to restore law and order – but also to encourage prisoners to confront their violent ways and carve out a better more peaceful future.

Filmed over 7 months, PRISON tells the human story on both sides of the door: staff and prisoners, and the real issues facing them all.
