Durham has one mental health nurse for almost 1000 men. At any one time at least 50% of prisoners are estimated to be suffering from mental health issues and the newly opened health wing has only 11 beds. The staff struggle to provide a safe and secure environment for prisoners arriving – often undiagnosed – with issues ranging from self-harm to suicidal thoughts, personality disorders to depression and acute psychoses. Yet despite these challenges the staff do everything they can to offer the emotional and practical support. The programme also explores the challenges posed by about to be released prisoners suffering from mental health issues who have nowhere to go and no support when they leave the prison walls.
Filmed over 7 months, PRISON tells the human story on both sides of the door: staff and prisoners, and the real issues facing them all.
