This definitive six-part series will explore every facet of Britain’s most legendary prime minster. We’ll reveal the secrets of his aristocratic upbringing, his formative years in the military, his rise to political power, his wartime leadership, and his legacy. We’ll look at his biggest triumphs, most disastrous defeats and reflect on his lasting legacy.
As we work chronologically through his life with a combination of beautiful photographs, nostalgic archive footage and interviews with historians, biographers and those that knew him the series will be simultaneously the story of his life and a poignant history of modern Britain.
His early years are no longer in living memory, but we’ll visit the places that made him, Blenheim Palace, St George’s School, Harrow School and Connaught Place. We’ll use light reconstruction and delve into his personal letters and historical archives. The Churchill Archive contains thousands of letters, telegrams, artefacts, books, and speeches that offer a picture of Britain’s most admired orator in his own eloquent words. Away from the public eye Churchill was a talented artist, keen writer, and family man to his wife Clementine and their five children.
In later episodes we will use archive film of Churchill alongside nostalgic and moving footage of Britain during those decades. This footage will be a combination of ITN’s own archive and fair dealt material.
There’ll be surprising revelations as we reveal the man behind his public persona, his love life, hobbies, beliefs, and his complex character.
This series contains 6 episodes x 45 minutes in length.
