On Friday, July 7, 2006, RCMP Constable Robin Cameron and her partner, Constable Marc Bourdages, were shot down in the line of duty after an extensive car chase. Both passed away the following week. A member of the Beardy’s First Nation, Robin had always aspired to be like her father, Howard, also a member of the RCMP. But she faced obstacles along the way, including poor eyesight which had to be surgically repaired, and a teen pregnancy that left her the single young mother of her little girl, Shayne. But Robin persevered, and in 2001 achieved her dream. She was eventually posted to the tiny, intimate detachment at Spiritwood, SK. On that fateful day, irate over the outcome of a court case, Curtis Dagenais almost ran Robin down outside the community’s courthouse. A police chase followed, resulting in the death of two of Spiritwood’s finest and the devastation of their families, their communities, and the department they proudly served. In the wake of Robin and Marc’s ultimate sacrifice, both continue to be honoured by their families and communities, and would have been proud of the lasting legacies of their service.
