Mya is a 10-year-old Anishinaabe girl from Kitigan Zibi who lives in Gatineau, Quebec. Mya has two fish in a tank in her room, named Cardi and Coco – and she loves them very much! She also loves playing hockey and even built a rink in her back yard. At pow wows, Mya dances a style called women’s traditional. She’ll show us how, and tell us all about her beautiful regalia – her favourite part is a special cape with a long white fringe. She also shows us all about how she makes scrunchies out of kokom scarves, and has even started her own business! Mya and her friend Morgan go for a bike ride in the park, and back home she’ll show us some of her paintings, and then teach us how to make her favourite dessert – apple crisp! Mya’s special word is “e-naw-ba-gis” which means “please” in her Algonquin Anishinabemowin language.
