The ancient Mesoamerican Olmec civilization, 1200 BC to 400 BC, was one of the earliest in the Americas. Located in what is Mexico today, the fertile farmland and plentiful rainfall nurtured a thriving culture and the Olmec traded obsidian and jade with other cultures. Their cities were centres for political and religious ceremonies. Their shamanistic priests accessed the spirit world, and their gods represented natural events. The colossal, carved stone heads probably represented Olmec rulers. Reviews at the end of each segment. Video developed by a history curriculum writer.
