Although the war in Ukraine continues to dominate all the headlines, many have forgotten that a war had already been raging in Donbas for the past eight years. Ukraine: The Road to War traces that geopolitical history of the Ukrainian conflict from 2014 onward, uncovering its roots in history. Mingling geopolitical and intimate narratives, this documentary brings to new light the origins of this war at Europe's gates.

With access to top officials participating in negotiations, Ukraine: The Road to War shows what is at stake as well as Europe's weaknesses towards Russia and the return of Cold War dynamics. Looking at the history of the conflict via archival footage along with key participants, the origins of the war are discussed, going back as far as the fall of the USSR. A deep analysis of a complicated situation is delivered through interviews with officials from all sides as geopolitics are relayed in a lively, human, and nuanced way.
The film also tells the story of the civilians in Donbas. Particularly those who live near the frontline and who are caught in the middle. For them, war is an enmeshed everyday reality. During the time of filming in December 2021, 100,000 Russian soldiers gathered by the 500-kilometer line which separates the self-proclaimed Republics of Donetsk and Luhansk from Ukraine. As these troops gathered, the world held its breath.

"Skillfully weaving political and intimate stories, combining archival footage, interviews with some of the negotiators and reports from the front line to offer a sort of archeology of the current war in Ukraine."— France tv

"Retraces the chronicle of an announced war, rigorously constructed and richly enlightened by interviews with leading American, Russian, Ukrainian, French, [and] German actors... [the] richly documented film traces the war before the war in Ukraine"— Telerama

"A clear and didactic doc which allows [us] to put the conflict in its context and to gain a little height."— Cable Sat

"Anne Poiret does not content herself with delivering a geopolitical account. She also [shows] us that of Katya, Oxana, Nicolai, Larissa, Sacha and Olga who, like thousands of Ukrainian civilians living along the front line, have been helplessly undergoing an endless war in Donbass since 2014 and have seen their lives rocked by horror in recent months, most of them forced to choose between exile and death. A highly recommendable documentary to understand all the issues of this conflict that is raging at the gates of Europe."— L'Obs

"The merit of Anne Poiret is to have the key actors of the conflict or their close advisors...Also takes us into the miserable life of the inhabitants of Donbass, trapped between supporters of the kyiv regime and pro-Russian Ukrainains... Sheds light on the complexity of the conflict but also that of the endless negotiations that led to the Minsk agreements... This chronicle of an announced war allows us today to make the link with the current war."— Philippe Rochot, reporter, France Télévisions
