The bystander effect has long been used to explain the lack of ‘good Samaritan behaviour’ towards people who have been harmed, or are at risk of harm. This film looks at new research that takes us beyond the bystander effect and how it explains the lack of help given to James Bulger, a two-year-old who was abducted and murdered by two 10-year-old boys. It goes on to show how the psychology of bystander behaviour can help us to become more proactive witnesses.
