At a time when our relationship with the earth and all the species we share it with is in grave peril, the experiences of Pelee Islanders offer some solutions and hope for the future.
Told through the voices of 7th generation islanders, historians, species at risk scientists, and others making their living on the island, Species versus Spaces is the story of a small island community and its efforts to achieve balance between meeting the needs of people and the many rare and at-risk wild species that also call it home. Government policies isolating ecological concerns over loss of species and habitats from socioeconomic factors of island life have led, at times, to tense confrontations on the island.
Narrated by Paul Vassey.
“This documentary educates the viewer to the ecological history and present richness of Pelee Island, a unique refuge occupying the most southern extent of Canada. While highlighting the natural richness of the island, attention is brought to the tensions that exist between a sensitive ecological integrity and the cultural and economic pressures that human settlement brings to the land. The Pelee people’s efforts to meet those challenges provide thoughtful insights for all of us living in the natural landscape.” – Gord Miller, former Environmental Commissioner of Ontario
