OIW (Our Incredible World) investigators, Tabitha and Jack, are sent on a mission to learn about aquatic and semi-aquatic species at risk. Our environment is connected by lakes, streams, rivers and wetlands that are important to human needs and are home to an amazing diversity of species. Jack heads to Rondeau Park where he sets up a night-time stakeout, survivor man style, for the nocturnal Fowler's toad that inhabits beaches and marshes in the park. He meets a herpetologist who explains why the toads are at risk and invites Jack to check out a breeding program for Fowler’s toads. Tabitha meanwhile meets with Matt Windle, a Mohawk biologist at the St. Lawrence River Institute who introduces her to the long journeys made by American eel in their life cycle; they are born in the Sargasso Sea, migrate to the St. Lawrence River, spend years maturing here, then travel back to the Sargasso to lay their eggs for a new generation. Climate change, parasites and contaminants are among the threats to this species. He also shows her some of the ingenious ways in which people are helping eels survive.
