Nicholas recounts the story of how the parents of a severely disabled child in a fishing village in Nova Scotia won for their son the right to a normal, loving family life. They did this through an innovative respite care program, developed by a social worker with the Canadian Association for Community Living. The film demonstrates that it is possible for individuals and government institutions to work together to devise imaginative community-based respite care programs.
