Fostering the survival of an aboriginal language is even more difficult outside a native context, i.e. off-reserve, outside a community of speakers. Isadore Toulouse teaches in non-native, urban contexts, in the heartland of Ontario - Hamilton, Barrie and York Region.
This episode focuses on Mr. Toulouse's travels to four different urban-based schools every week, where we witness, first-hand and with raw immediacy, his efforts to pass on his own enthusiasm and passion for the Ojibwe language to his students. We witness firsthand the energy and dedication that sustain this professional "one-man show". We also catch glimpses of his family life, particularly his son who has become a language activist himself.
The documentary series ‘Finding Our Talk’ celebrates the many Canadian and international individuals, communities and organizations that are reclaiming their Indigenous languages, culture, stories, and identity.
