Canoeing has been a part of the west coast First Nations People’s cultures throughout the centuries. Canoe families spend their summers travelling up and down the coast of B.C. competing in races.  We follow Jedson August of Cowichan Tribes as he builds traditional dugout canoes for his family, operates a canoe club, and talks about his story with the sport. His granddaughter, Janelle Paige, is a canoe paddler and a competitive racer. And traditional canoe builder and carver, Elder ‘Luschiim’ Arvid Charlie, speaks about his life with the canoes.

Also available in Inuktitut: Salish Canoeing (Ep 6)

The television documentary series “First Across the Line” explores the rich history of successful Indigenous (First Nations/Métis/Inuit) athletes and how today’s youths are inspired.
