In this enlightening episode, Jerry Woods, Build Inc. co-founder and the First Aboriginal Chair of a Human Rights Commission in Canada discusses the impact of the residential school system on Indigenous peoples in Canada. He founded Build Inc. (Building Urban Industries for Local Development) as a training program for people who face barriers to employment, people most employers would deem “unemployable.” Many trainees have had contact with the criminal justice system, some are struggling with addictions, and many have unstable home environments. Two graduates, Darcy, David and Precious tell us their incredible stories of growing up as indigenous youth in Canada. While we learn how colonization, residential schools and current government programs have contributed to injustices and discrimination, Build Inc., shows us how social enterprises can bring lasting solutions.
