Tucked away behind a wall of trees on the outskirts of Victoria is the grand Edwardian estate of Hatley Park, complete with baronial turreted castle and 600 acres of gardens, forests and waterfalls. Built at the dawn of the last century, Hatley is a testament to the absolute power of British Columbia's richest man James Dunsmuir. Hatley was built for a dynasty but turned into a fabulous folly after the fortune was frittered away. Only a military college and then a university rescued it from rack and ruin.
