Founded in 1883 by Dr. Jenny Trout and Dr. Emily Stowe, it was the first medical teaching facility for women in Canada. Its existence would mark two major social movements in Canada - the suffragist movement - and the push for universal Health Care. The story of Women's College Hospital is one of medical breakthroughs - and social upheaval. From refining early cervical detection in 1947 and the introduction of birth control to its breakthroughs in unique cardiac care for women in 1996, Women's College has often been a point of controversy. A tour through facilities, old and new, marks the progress of healthcare and equality in Canada; from the tiny seven bed hospital to the magnificent facility it is today.
