From its headwaters at Lac de Gras, the Coppermine River flows to its mouth at the Coronation Gulf of the Arctic Ocean, at the community of Kuglugtuk. The river snakes through a great variety of landscapes along its course: from stark Arctic tundra, through dense spruce forests and the rolling hills of the barren lands. Caribou and muskox flourish along its banks, and raptors nest in cliff walls. The history of the Coppermine is fascinating, rich and diverse. The River has provided sustenance for the Copper Inuit and Dene people for millennia. Traditional fishing is still carried out at Bloody Falls. European explorers Samuel Hearne and John Franklin traveled through the region, in search of precious metals and a route to the fabled North-west Passage. But the precious commodity of the Coppermine today is a double-edged sword. Will the discovery of diamonds along its shores compromise the purity of its waters?
