When BC's Tatshenshini-Alsek Provincial Park was designated in 1993, it created, in conjunction with the adjacent Yukon and Alaska Parks, the largest protected area in the world. It is the only large river drainage that is totally protected from its headwaters to the ocean. The Tatshenshini has become known as one of the wildest rivers in the world. On its 140 mile journey to the sea it cuts through a variety of terrains, from dense forest to deep canyon to broad glacially-scoured valleys.
