Ivvavik National Park is located on the Northern tip of the Yukon, bordered by Alaska and the Beaufort Sea. The 10,000 square metre park encompasses the most productive region of the Western Arctic, known as the 'north slope.' The landscape is characterized by treeless arctic tundra, and the low, rounded British Mountains. 100 people visit this austere wilderness park every year, most to raft the wild Firth River. Ivvavik means "a place for giving birth, a nursery", in recognition of the park's role as the calving ground for the Porcupine Caribou herd. The annual migration of over 160,000 porcupine caribou is the park's most breathtaking wildlife event. The park is also home to Grizzly Bears, wolves, muskox and Dall's Sheep.
