Canada's 7th largest park was created in1996 near Churchill, Manitoba. Wapusk National Park protects an area of the Hudson Bay Lowlands, which contains the the world's largest concentration of polar bears. Wapusk National Park sits along the northern tree line, which is characterized by treeless tundra and boreal forest. During the short, intense summer, a variety of wild flowering plants spring from the tundra soil. Every summer, 3500 beluga whales move into the Churchill River estuary and polar bears move along the coast, waiting for their winter hunting grounds out on the frozen expanse of Hudson Bay to become accessible again. Arctic fox, red fox, lynx, wolverine and caribou are frequently seen along the coast in summer cruising the tidal flats.
