Nahanni National Park Reserve is a world-renowned destination for canoeists and white-water enthusiasts. Nestled in the south west corner of the North West Terrritories, the Park protects 200 miles of the 250 mile long South Nahanni River. The Park was designated the first ever UNESCO World Heritage Site, because of its spectacular scenery and unique geological features. As it winds its way through broad river valleys and steep-walled canyons, the River offers spectacular scenery and a unique wilderness experience. The highlight of a trip down the Nahanni is magnificent Virginia Falls, twice the size of Niagara. The wild and treacherous South Nahanni River has claimed the lives of many reckless adventurers, which has only contributed to the river's mystique. The River is named for the ancient inhabitants of the region, the Naha Dene, ferocious mountain people who have since disappeared.
