On a swelteringly hot day Kevin and Alanna find Uncle Norm covered in perspiration...and, is that yogurt all over his face? He picked up frozen yogurt cones for himself and the kids, but they immediately started melting, so he had to, well, ya know, eat them. He waves his sticky, empty hands and shrugs sheepishly. To show Uncle Norm how cool it is to know about different temperatures Alanna makes a hands-on visit to a master glass blower, who treats us to a wide variety of hot and cold issues she deals with everyday.
The Gist: This episode is about using the thermometer as an instrument to measure temperature and about identifying degree measures as benchmarks for relating to information about temperatures of the air and water. In the curriculum, children are required to estimate, read (i.e., using a thermometer), and record positive temperatures to the nearest degree Celsius (i.e., using a number line; using appropriate notation); identify benchmarks for freezing, cold, cool, warm, hot, and boiling temperatures as they relate to water and for cold, cool, warm, and hot temperatures as they relate to air (e.g.,water freezes at 0°C; the air temperature on a warm day is about 20°C, but water at 20°C feels cool).
