On March 13, 1948, history was made when the colour barrier was broken in the National Hockey League. A year after Jackie Robinson played in the Major Leagues of Baseball, Larry Kwong became the first person of Asian descent to play in the National Hockey League. He played only one shift in the third period for the New York Rangers and never played in the NHL again. However, his minute on the ice would be a seminal moment in history as he would blaze a trail for hockey players of other minorities and cultures to follow in his footsteps.

From being denied jobs because of the colour of his skin to eventually being given the keys to New York’s Chinatown, Larry Kwong’s triumph over incredible adversity opened the door for aspiring hockey players of all ethnicities for generations to come.

Through the telling of Larry’s story, it will be seen that race was not even a thought in the minds of those closest to him, in contrast to the popular thinking of society at that time. Larry's story is one that needs to be told as it shows that with the power of one’s dreams, anything can be achieved no matter who or what you are.

Also available in Cantonese.
