W5 investigates the story of a Ukrainian boy who became an accidental casualty of war in 2015. Mykola Nzychnykovskyi was critically injured when an undetonated grenade exploded while he was playing near a Ukrainian military training base, leaving him a triple amputee. A Canadian medical team in Kyiv performed surgeries and later the Shriners Hospital in Montreal provided a year of treatment and rehabilitation.
In 2017 the family returned to Ukraine where Mykola set records as a swimmer. His dream of competing in the Olympics was put on hold by the pandemic. His path to rehabilitation is filled with challenges, but his spirit of resilience inspires those who have treated him. The Russian attacks on their hometown of Mariupol have terrified the family. His determination and resilience has inspired all who meet and work with him.
