As many as 1 in 5 Canadians will suffer from a mental illness in their lifetime and for many, that battle will begin in adolescence. A panel consisting of national spokesperson and former Olympian Clara Hughes, TSN “off the Record” host, Michael Landsberg and Stephanie Muskat talk openly about mental illness. As national figures, Hughes and Landsberg have made it their mission to break the stigma. They speak to youth to let them know they don’t have to be perfect. They also encourage people to get help. Muskat shares her story of PTSD and anxiety and credits the Kids Help Line with helping her. In another story, Jayson Pham’s life changed 3 years ago when he was hit by a car. He developed depression and PTSD. He didn’t know how to reach out for help because the stigma of mental illness was so great in his mind. He now speaks publicly and reaches out to other youth.
