Buying a used car? Then you may find sobering the findings of the Automobile Protection Association's annual survey of the automotive industry. When the national figures are tallied up, at best you have a 40 per cent chance of finding a fair deal.
This year the APA, teaming up exclusively with W-FIVE, surveyed 57 used car dealers in three cities - Vancouver, Toronto and Montreal. Among the findings that caused a failing grade:
vehicles that had suffered serious accidents that weren't disclosed;
misleading advertising;
extra fees tacked onto the price;
unregistered dealers selling cars.
The Automobile Protection Association, better known as the APA, is a Montreal-based non-profit association dedicated to promoting consumer interests. For years, the APA has surveyed the car industry and W-FIVE has reported on those surveys. This year's was the 10th such survey.
