Kristen is nine months into recovery, but she is still struggling with how to best occupy her "clean" time. Before drugs and alcohol gave her an easy out from dealing with stress and finding something to do. Frustrated, she admits "Drugs have taken my family, my friends, my life really." Rand asks her to focus on one day at a time or even getting through one hour at a time. To demonstrate how addiction plays in one's life, Rand shows his class how a lab rat's addiction leads to fatal choices because of its desire for drugs. Finally, Kirsten takes Rand's advice and tries out for a high school fashion show and looks for a job. She also begins to realize that things like staying sober for a day are also making her happy.
