The Tlingit settled along the pacific Northwest coast waterways and dominated a robust trade network with inland tribes. They valued wealth and redistributed it through potlaches. Russia, hungry for land and furs, became a new threat to them when they migrated to the Aleutian and Kodiak islands, home of the Alutiiq, in the 1740s. As their trade expanded, they regularly came into conflict with the Tlingit. The video includes The Battle of Sitka, the Kiks.ádi clan, Alexander Baranov’s Fort St. Michael, and Sitka war chief K 'alyáan. The Tlingit persisted against foreign occupation, and in 1867 the Czar of Russia sold the troublesome colony of Alaska to the United States.
