In 1750 the Abenaki Nation was fighting for survival in eastern North America, caught between the British and French. They were on the western edge of Wabanaki (Dawnland) Confederacy territory and were one of the first Indigenous Nations to trade and work with Europeans. The French needed the Abenaki to protect them from the Iroquois Confederacy and British American colonies. They showed respect for the French by calling them Father, which the French mistook for submission.

European diseases and wars reduced the Abenaki population by 85%, and no Abenaki participated in the Treaty of Paris discussions though they had been supporting France since the beginning.
