In 1676, the Mohawks made an alliance with Great Britain. One hundred years later this promise forced them to choose between a new American Republic and their old British allies. The Kanien’kehá:ka, the People of the Flint (Mohawks) lived in the Mohawk River Valley and were part of the Iroquois Confederacy. We learn about The Covenant Chain, English settlers in the Mohawk and Hudson Valleys, Mohawk alliance with Sir William Johnson (Warraghiyagey), Washington’s attack on Jumonville Glen, Theyanoguin and the Battle of Monongahela, the Battle of Fort Niagara, the surrender of Montreal, the Treaty of Paris, Joseph Brant (Thayendanegea), the American Revolution, the Siege of Fort Stanwix, the Treaty of Paris, and the relocation of the Mohawk in Ontario and Quebec. Their loyalty to the British had cost them their homeland, but they got revenge in 1812 when they helped defend their new homeland against the Americans.
