In Ohio Country a powerful Indigenous coalition had emerged to resist the annexation of their homeland by New Englanders. The Shawnee Prophet, Tenskwatawa, spread the message of strength through unity among First Nations, and established Prophet’s Town, a stronghold of First Nations resistance. The warrior Tecumseh helped him work to get an Aboriginal State. The British supplied Tecumseh with arms, and when Governor Harrison set out to attack Prophet’s Town, Tecumseh’s brother Tenskwatawa decided to rout the enemy while they slept after having offered to negotiate. In retaliation, Harrison ransacked and burned Prophet’s Town.
When the Americans invaded Upper Canada in 1812, Tecumseh offered to help General Isaac Brock, hoping that the British might grant some land in return. Fort Detroit surrendered in less than a day, but in the Battle of Queenston Heights, Brock was killed. Sieges at Fort Meigs and Fort Stephenson were unsuccessful with Brock’s replacement, Henry Proctor. In The Battle of the Thames, Tecumseh was also shot down, ending his dream of an Aboriginal nation, but his efforts helped lay the foundation for Canada. Tecumseh’s principles and courage made him a revered figure.
