GreenHeroes at the root of the earth's problems helping find new ways to tackle deforestation, GMOs, mass food production and even poverty in Africa.
- Tzeporah Berman, organized a series of protests that drew 10,000 supporters at the height of the Clayoquot Sound conflict in British Columbia in1993. This became Canada's largest civil disobedience case, with 1,000 people arrested. Berman has continued a life-long fight against the practice of clear-cutting forests.
- Former Kenyan Government MP, Wangari Maathai is an absolute force and a world-class Green Hero. She founded the Greenvelt Movement in Kenya after listening to women’s stories of land degradation and environmental destruction. In 2004, she was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, the first African woman to be thus honoured; this inspired The United Nations 'Billion Tree Campaign' in 2006. Over 10 billion trees have been planted since worldwide.
- Laura Reinsborough, a real pioneer for local food usage, founded ‘Not Far From the Tree’. This organization harvested fruit from residential trees, inspired by the Heritage Orchards at Spadina Museum. Beginning in 2007, volunteers soon collected 1.5 million pounds worth of fruit. Her idea may be simple but the issues and potential it touches upon are profound, reducing food waste and increasing food access through community food banks.
