Erin Goodpipe and Saxon de Cocq travel to Treaty 5 territory which includes parts of northern Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Ontario. There they explore the issue of food sovereignty and how Treaty 5 limited people’s ability to feed their communities. Settler encroachment took away the ability of the Indigenous peoples to sustain themselves from the bounty of the land upon which they lived. They learn about how innovative gardeners in Norway House Cree Nation provide greens year-round and engage in land-based education where they go ice fishing.

“Treaty Road” is an in-depth 6-part documentary series that follows Métis writer, director and producer Saxon de Cocq and Dakota/Anishinaabekwe educator and researcher, Erin Goodpipe as they travel the old roads to uncover the truth about the signing of the controversial documents, the Numbered Treaties. They examine the role that Saxon’s ancestor, James Mackay played in the numbered treaty negotiations.
