Family violence impacts people of all ages, economic strata and cultures. Police are often called in to de-escalate situations. When things calm down a trusted elder, teacher or counsellor can help. Doug Noganoosh and Brent Trivett respond to a domestic call; they manage to reason with the intoxicated couple and separate them for the night.  Brent recalls a stressful encounter with an aggressive, drunken man armed with a knife.  He had to draw his gun (before police had tasers) but managed to arrest him without any violence. Brent locates a man wanted for harassment of bank employees, arrests him and brings him in to resolve the complaint. We see the strict protocol police follow when making an arrest.

Brent describes what life was like growing up on Georgina Island as the son of a police officer, and what the job is like now for him as a community police office. The Rama Police Service aim to protect and police the community with honour and respect, facing danger with courage and upholding the law in a way that honours their ancestors. Drugs, alcohol, and traffic safety are the top concerns of the Rama Nation. Video footage is a significant asset for the officers.

An elder (speaking in Ojibwe) describes how she learned many things from her grandmother as a child. She regrets that children today don’t always have elders teaching them and that alcohol abuse has led some Anishinaabe men to lose their identity.
