We meet three of the Rama Tribal Police officers. Larry patrols for speeders. Dave is part of the motorcycle unit. Penny has been a front-line officer for over 20 years. Dave recalls a terrible road accident in 2011. A pickup truck with an intoxicated, texting driver crossed the median doing 100 km per hour and totaled a car with two girls inside. One girl was killed, and a roadside memorial was erected in her memory. The memorial is kept and cherished by the girl’s family and the Rama First Nations community in Ontario. Penny talks about the importance of having female police officers and the skills required.
The Ojibwe of Rama are water people, and the police patrol the lake as well as the land here. Elder Lorraine McRae describes the water ceremony and the value of water to life; she introduces a song of thanks for Mother Earth as women, traditional waterkeepers, perform the ceremony on the shores of Lake Couchiching, Ontario.
