‘Qallunaaliaqpallianiq: Heading South’ explores the experiences of Inuit “migrants” to the South: their dreams, their accomplishments, the paths they follow and their interactions with the urban world.
In Ottawa, Tunngasuvvingat Inuit provides services and support for urban Inuit, and serves ‘country food’ once a month. A University of Ottawa student feels disconnected from nature in the city and values the sense of community provided by the University’s Aboriginal Resource Centre.
Inuk Joey Flowers, a McGill law student from Goose Bay, Labrador, helps to lobby against local opposition to an Inuit health centre in the community of Villeray, Montreal. He hopes to inspire other Inuit youth to achieve academic success.
In Toronto, renowned Sculptor David Rubin Piktoukun from Paulatuk, NWT, rejects the anger that built up during his residential school years, preserving his Inuit culture through his art. As he completes a sculpture installation, he describes the prejudices he experienced because he uses some non-traditional materials.
Mary Simon, the National Leader of the Inuit of Canada says: “There’s a new wind blowing over the Inuit”. A new generation, proud and determined, is seeing the light, resolutely turning to the future and all the challenges that that implies.
"Continuing with his passion for making films that expose and remove prejudices, Quebec filmmaker Guy Simoneau has created Qallunaaliaqpallianiq – Heading South, a compelling documentary that focuses on Inuit living in southern cities of Canada"
