Canada's eastern most geographic region is an area shaped by the forces of glaciation and the ocean waters that surround it. Erosion has carved the rounded peaks of the oldest mountain range in Canada. Steep, rock cliffs, fjords, tides, and some of the oldest rocks in the world are found here along with fertile valleys and the red soils synonymous with Prince Edward Island potato farms. The first settled region of Canada has a long and storied history. Early inhabitants like the Mi'kmaq and Beothuk carved out lives both on the coast and inland in the colder months.

   The Appalachian region has multiple provinces within it from Quebec, P.E.I., Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Newfoundland and crosses the Canada-U.S. border. Not as high as The Rockies, the Appalachian mountains are much older than those of the West and have been eroding for a longer period of time. Erosion is the wearing away of Earth's surface by the action of water, ice and wind.

   Coastal areas in the Appalachians have climate that can be cool, wet and foggy that comes from the cold winds of the Atlantic Ocean, bringing extreme storms and rainfalls. Inland, the weather is more dry, but can see some of the largest snowfalls. Newfoundland is the foggiest region of Canada and this is due to warm Gulf winds meeting cold North Atlantic winds. Fog, is tiny droplets of water suspended in the air, like a cloud at ground level.

   Some of the earliest inhabitants of the Appalachian region are the Beothuk in Newfoundland. They fished on the coast during the spring and went inland in the winter time to hunt moose and beaver. However, life for them changed when the first European settlers arrived. They moved the Beothuk away from their traditional lands and spread diseases like small pox and TB which led to their extiction. The Mi'kmaq have fourished in the Appalachian region for thousands of years, and have the Mi'kmaq Grand Council who work to preserve their culture and people in present day.

   The very first European settlers to arrive in the Appalachians were the Vikings over 1,000 years ago. They established a small colony that can still be seen in homes they created in L'Anse aux Meadows. Years later, explorers like Champlain arrived on the shores where they made contact with First Nations people and established settlements and trade.
